strange noise

Hi, I just was wondering if someone might have a solution to a problem i am having. The other day i took my car out for a ride and everything was fine until i put it in 5th gear, then everytime i hit gas it would make this loud noise almost like i was driving a truck. The noise is hard to describe except that it sounds like a diesel everytime i hit the gas and it only makes this noise in 5th gear. Does anyone know what problems i might be having? i have an 86 z28 350 4bbl q-jet with original 5 speed manual trans.
Thanks for any info

How fast are you going when you put it in 5th? Sounds like you're bogging the motor.

The description sounds like spark knock.

Too much timing advance. Back it off a bit until it stops.

These are the paths of wisdom.

im going about 50-60 when going into 5th. It does sound like it might be bogging but I won't say for sure because I don't know but would backing the iab out a bit help any? I tightned it before it started making the noise and also set the idle screw higher for a higher idle but since have backed the idle screw out again. If it is the iab how do i go about fixing it? Like how many turns from the bottom should i back it out? Thanks

Thats exactly what running lean means... less fuel. But thats a dangerous way to try to improve gas mileage. That too can lead to detonation (knocking).

argh i cant figure this out. It uses alot of fuel when it is idle and even more when getting around, I have no clue what the hell could be the problem. I mean so much fuel consumption just from the iab? I'm getting kind of agitated seeing as I have to make a 3 hour trip this weekend. Hopefully I can get this solved soon. Any suggestions would be great, Thanks

to me it sounds like your running it rich and you adjusted you IAB inward before it started doing this and it didn't do it before.. I would adjust it outward ruffly the same number of turns you adjusted it inward....set it back to where it was.. also to note I'm **** drunk right now so take my advice with a grain of salt. thanks!

I don't have a dwell meter but i might have to go pick one up they are frickin expensive though like $30-40 and i prob just need it this one time. But ill see if i can get my refund for it seeing as I'll only need it for 1-2 days. But if don't scrounge up enough money for one I'm just going to have to try fiddling with the iab again. Thanks for the help

P.S. if i do get a dwell meter what should the dwell be set at?
