Ideas on engine pinging

Anyone got any ideas on how to make an engine stop pinging besides running the high octane gas in it. The computer has been by-passed and so the knock sensor doesn't work anymore. It's not terrible, but none the less annoying.

Is it pinging because something is wrong with it or just becuase the compression ratio is too high for the fuel U use?

I need to know engine/induction as stated above, but offhand, I'd say the timing could be too far advanced, or it's too lean of a mixture. Just a quick side note, when an engine pings, it's like hitting everying in the combustion chamber and rotating assy. with a hammer, and pinging starts way before it's audible it only becomes audible when the valves start getting slamed shut, and the piston starts getting slamed aganst the cylender walls.

Watch out because your engine will be destroyed.

It's a 305 with an Edelbrock intake and Edelbrock 650 carb and headers. Other than that, it's stock.

I doubt the compression is too high because it's stock besides the intake, carb and headers. The only thing wrong with it is the engine is not using the computer to work. The computer has been by-passed.

do you have the stock eletrical distributor or a old/aftremarken vacume distributor...if you have the stock one it WILL NOT WORK without the stock carb and the coumputer, also what is your timing set at and how do your plugs look?

Yeah, you need to use a '74-'79 GM HEI with mechanical and vacuum advance (well, this would be an easy one to use, there are of course other options)..

Or, you can bolt your old E4ME (780 SCFM) back on the Edelbrock intake and re-enable all the ECM functionality.

This may be a stupid question but what does the "S" stand for? "S" cubic feet per minute.
