gas tank removal

I need help with removing my gastank. It looks like i have everything removed that would get in teh way, but the filler neck is getting stuck. Could somebody tell me what i need to do or post a link to an article. Ive been searching for hours. thanks

if you have everything unbolted and out of the way it'll pretty much fall out. you might have to move it a bit to find the right spot. helps to have a helper guide the filler neck.

I thought i read something before that the shocks need unbolted. But it doesnt look like the axle is in the way.

Sorry for being so stupid. Do i have to compress the springs before i drop it. And do i have to take the sway bar endlinks loose. Or drag the whole damn thing out from under the car.

just unbolt the shocks and let the rear down with a floor jack, leave it hang, all you need to do is lower it. watch the brake lines when you lower it.

I just dropped mine yesterday to get it sumped tomorrow. I left the rear in the car until I got the 9" put together...actually finihsed assebley and welding today, but the only real problem I had was that metal brace that goes under the panhard rod. Not the panhard rod itself, but that brace I assume that goes from one rear "frame rail" to the other. I ended upcutting it out since the bolt was rust welded to the thing on the pass side. Once that bar was outta the way it came right out. The filler neck takes a little finagaling, but it will come out with everything else hooked up, at least mine did.

I installed a bulkhead fitting near the sending unit opening, and I have the funny feeling once I get the AN 90* fitting on there I'm gonna have to dimple the "floor pan" area above where this will be since it's soo tight. I could've installed it down low, but did'nt want the thing to be constantly submerged in fuel for possible leaks in the future so I choose the top instead like a cell is.

Definately wait to put it back in until I have the old rear end out of the car.

I had the same problem. I don't know how to add the link here but if you do a search for gas tank removal and put the name kingchris my old post will come up. Wut it all came down to for me was takin a crobar and prying the filler neck down while kickin the gas tank out. Worked for me.

Thanks for the replies, i tried prying on it, but i just hate tearing **** up that im trying to fix. I guess thats what its gonna take though. Is it any easier getting it back in?

we didnt have a problem with dropping or putting back in it should come out pretty easy you may have to pull slightly down on the tank while the filler neck is in the hole but remember if you do that you will take a chance at breaking the welds where it goes into the tank and then you got yourself a messs

Getting it back in was pretty easy but i had to do the same thing, pry the neck down and have my brother kick the tank in. Everybodys car is different and for me i absolutely had no choice but to pry it out and kick it. The fit was too tight. Just dont break the filler neck.

there is a black plastic trim piece around the filler neck.

you have to take that out first.

i put in a new pump last summer. i was able to get the thing out (with a bit of struggle and a few curses) without dropping the entire rear end. i only undid the passenger side. and yes, the filler neck is what makes the removal a pain. why couldnt they be nice and just use a rubber hose setup like some of the older cars out there?

oh, and if you're doing a fuel pump, go AC Delco or better. i'd hate to have to do this job again. and seeing as my original one lasted 13+ yrs, i have a faith in this one. lets hope it holds up

yeah it would be nice if they used that rubber hose that all the olderones used makes ya wonder WHY NOT ..lol.....yeah i couldnt agree with ya more about the brand of fuel pump to use either the better you get the longer its gonna last usually ...not always but usually .....id definatly use a gm original again thou they seem to last the longest ..you may pay a little more for em than the autozone or what every brand you can get for less money

I finally got it out. I pulled the pickup assembly out of the tank and saw a pump on it. I have tbi and i thought they only had the mechanical pump on the engine. Could this tank be from a different car with fuel injection?

TBI has an electric fuel pump, just probably not as high volume as TPI.
