Doin' a 383....
Doin' a 383....
For my first time. I got all the components, and before I get the engine balanced, I need to check the cam to rod clearance.
I'm a little uncertain on what to do. Any suggestions?
Thanks

Install the crank. Install a piston and rod, rings are not necessary. Install the cam and timing set. Rotate the engine carefully while watching the rod approach the cam as it passes through the top of the block. .050" of clearance would be the goal. You could use a piece of wire, sheet of aluminum, etc. as a gauge. It will probably need to be something flexible. Do all 8 piston & rod assemblies that way if there is any doubt at all.
With a 383, you aren't likely to have big problems in that area.

aftermarket rods will usually give you a little more clearance. someone was grinding rod clearance last week and poked a hole in the block. first time i've saw that posted on here, but it'd be something to watch out for. might want to consider getting the area UT checked so you know waht you have before you start grinding. also if it were me i'd UT it then add enought grout to fill about 1/4 to 3/8 inch of the water jacket at the bottom if it was going to be close after i ground it. for a gauge i use a piece of music wire crinped in a piece of steel tubeing. if music wire is hard to find in your area buy a guitar string in the correct diameter.
