now removing old column

hey there , My car was broke in to a while back while it was parked , the kids tried to steal the car but I guess there wasn't enough juice in the old batery . but they had made a real mess of my column , everything was busted on the left hand side , so I went to my local pick your part and managed to find 1 third gen with a colunm left all the options matched mine so I grabbed it , even though it didn't have the key in the ignition.
so what i would like to do is use my ignition from my old column and put it in the new column .

I was looking at it today and can't see how the hell to take it out

could someone here share some light on my problem ?

Thanks
Chimera

Dude, no offense, but try and use the search feature next time. We have answered so many questions on this board you are more than likely going to find an answer. In this case, there was an illistrated step by step there for you.

lol smart move by gm, DONT illustrate how the actual ignition switch works......wouldnt be a good idea to be like "how to steal a camaro" heh......anyways.....this car doesnt have VATS or anything does it? cause if so.....itll have to be bypassed unless you use your old ignition switch in the new column.

anyways...pull the steering wheel off, thats how you remove the switch....pretty easy

thx ,
I'm not sure if the car has vats or anything , guess it would help to know what it was . LOL

I had no problem removing the lock from the new column (with no key) but having a bitch of a time removing the old column from the car , the shaft doesn't want to slide off and I can't really tell how the hell else to get it out.

When you remove the clamp bolt, you'll have to "spread" the clamp....I used a piece of flat bar wedged into the clamp, and turned it (to spread the clamp a bit) with a large adjustable wrench for leverage.

ok I'm not sure I get you , the shaft that comes out of the firewall has a single nut and bolt on it , this is the bolt I removed at the pick a part to remove the column , which worked well on the car I was working on there , I did the same thing at home but it isn't as well , I didn't see anything referring to a clamp , I could just not be looking in the right places but after the game I will go out after the game.

if I'm not looking in the right spot can you point me in the right spot if possible.

GO FLAMES GO...grrr...I'm a Sharks fan......

Anyways, the bolt you removed should go through and clamp the column to the splined shaft...least it was on an 83/84 I did a few years ago...haven't looked at my '89 to verify but I will in a few hours and post back.

just an update , tonight after i got home from work and the 4x4 shop getting front leafs I took another peep under the hood of the thirdgen , decided to take a hammer to it , about 15 to 30 mins later (I was hitting that hard ) the old buster up column poped out , I removed all the linkage and plugs and started to removed the good lock cylinder as well as install it to my new column .
well as it stands right now I have the column 98% back together after installing the lock. problem is I can't seem to get enough force down on the metel ring to get the snap ring back in place.
well I had it all together but forgot the plastic horn piece :O

this is it for now as my toyota pick busted a few leaf spings over the weekend and I have to fix the daily truck first.

thx for thoughs of you that helped me in my first stage of camaro "repair" (kicking, yelling , swearing, and lastly bleeding)

ok been fun l8r

Go to the parts store and borrow the tool. It'll make your life much easier.

bla to late , I don't have a credit card anyways to leave a deposit , anything around there this is what they want , but I will have an extra set of hands when I go to finish ,
oh and the only reason I had to use the hammer was I removed the column at the bolt over the intermdate shaft . and it was really really really oh there . it's done now , it's looking good.

the spring compressor tool for the steering column cost me a whole $30 CAD....

it's pretty cheap....

having had the same thing happen to me....
went to a junkyard, but all the cars either had the same damage or no tilt column. Bought the accessory kit and a new sleeve for like $200 and did all the work myself...

doing a search I found someone that posted an excellent howto on taking the steering column appart... it was for tightening up the column when it gets loose.

Whole slew of pics with it?
Yea, IIRC I think it was some little short guy with a tin can for a head.

Ok, I'm guessing on the short.
