valve cover torque setting?

i have an 83 trans am with the 305 and i need to change the valve cover gaskets.
my problem is that i do not know the torque setting in lbft or nm, as the shop books i have say an 83 does not have gaskets but uses sealent, but i have gaskets. at least that is what i was told as the car has not arrived yet.

can anyone advise on this?
Thanks.

WAG 50 in/lbs ought to work for you. i never really used a torque wrench on the valve covers, 1/4 drive tools and not any excessive force will work for you.

Put sealer on either side of the gasket, and snug it up. Once its cured (more or less) then tighten it up some. It doesn't really matter how much you torque the bolts, because they aren't under any stress or anything.

Just tighten them untill it feels tight, then leave it. If you go too far, you can warp the valve cover and it could leak a little.
