and how exactly can i tell if the ac did seize up, the belt was smoking from there before it snapped off on the way home.
but it also kinda seemed like the alternator was sezied up too. anyway to tell that either?

With the car off and the belt either off or on, you should still be able to turn the central part of the a/c compressor by hand (the part that stays still when you have the car running with the a/c off) with a little force..

If that pulley has three little bolts attaching it, thats your smog pump and they can have a tendency to lock up when they get old. They're not that expensive and its a lot better than your a/c being locked up..

sounds like your belt tensioner locked up on you if so its a common thing to have happen and you can go to an auto parts store and pick up a new one but they can be a little pricey any where from 50 - 100 bucks but that maybe what you got there not for sure without a pic thou

Its not the tensioner if its in that relative position (beneath the a/c compressor... the tensioner is to the drivers side of the a/c compressor).. It would be the smog pump (but check to see how the pulley is attached to make sure like I said).. However if it is the tensioner pulley, you can go to a parts store that sells bca/national bearings and ask for a S203FF (its like $5). Then a hammer and a couple sockets later, you have a fresh tensioner pulley..
