Does anyone here have a I4 Firebird/Camaro? I allways thought the 2.8L was a bit underpowered for the car, but I recall reading somewhere that a 4 cylinder version was available... Eek!
I'd like to see pics of how much space there must be left under the hood...

There were plenty of them at one time. They were pretty pitiful. Laughable even, for a car that's supposed to be "sporty".
That motor is 151 CID, basically half of a Pontiac 301. So it has the same bore spacing, and therefore block dimensions, as a Pontiac motor. It therefore leaves very little room under the hood. It was heavy and bulky, besides being underpowered; especially if you look at "HP/lb" or whatever.

I owned one!
Yea, they sucked!! Mine was a 1983 that I bought off a friend from work back in 1998 for $150.00, he said it had a miss that he couldn't figure out. It was a really good deal because the body was perfect. It had a 151cid with a 4 speed manual. It was fun while it lasted. I was planning on driving it home and installing the motor that is currently in my T/A.
Didn't make it. On the way home in the middle of no where, I found out what the miss was, a whole in one of the pistons which puked oil all over the enging compartment. I didn't care, I had a 355 to put in it and I needed to get it home and didn't want to pay for a tow. So I kept driving it untill it stopped. I got out, opened the hood and the engine was on fire and it was big in like seconds! Burned the dang thing to the ground right before my eyes! No one stopped to help either. My wife was pissed that I waisted $150.00.
Ah, memories.

I've heard stories about them. I think they're a myth. Like Unicorns.
Nah, they exist. Not one of GM's best offerings. Can you imagine a car so slow you would be left BEGGING for a 2.8L V6? That's what they were like. Just sad.

i drove 1 of them,.. it came in for ' no power". i went for a little test drive (out of the first driveway in our parking lot into the second driveway) & when i pulled it in the shop i told my boss it ran like half the motor was dead. it took 2 people to open the hood on it, i pulled the release, he pulled on the hood. both of us were tripping out as it only had half a motor,... lol. we were thinking the guy who owned it put it in as it had a clutch petal but had an automatic trans & a console for an auto trans. it also had nice flow through ventilation,... courtesy of no back window & no back floor boards. i offered him 50 bucks for it, it had some nice tires & wheels.

Here's my Iron Duke Firebird. It isn't much in the performance aspect, does great on gas and cruises pretty good on the open road in 5th gear.
I bought it in 1998 and I didn't know they came with 4 bangers when I looked at it. I didn't care, I was 18 and I needed some cool wheels to cruise around in. Got this car for $500.
Enjoy the pics....Im currently trying to go over the car again and fix all the problem areas. No plans on yanking the 4 for anything anytime soon.
This car has no accelleration at all. The 4 labors just to get it up to speed. I have yet to win any "off the line" drag races.
