Alternator bracket making me feel like idiot!
Alternator bracket making me feel like idiot!
Alright, here's my latest problem...
Stock version of this part won't fit.
I broke my top alternator bracket (high mount on passenger side) by overtightening the bolt when i tightened my alternator belt. So, I figured it was no problem and picked up another one at the junkyard from another thirdgen. Clean it up, bolt it on my engine. Looks virtually identical to the one I had, but the slot for the alternator bolt is sitting about a half inch higher than it should be. I thought that all of these brackets were identical (at least for long water pump applications). Could it be bent or something? or is it just a different version. The angles and dimensions on the "new" one look identical to the old one, but it just won't line up with the alternator. Thanks for any ideas.

Sounds like you may have gotten the bracket for the larger alternator, when you have the smaller one. I think the 85 and 86 tpi carws had the larger alternator.

Some of them bolt to a water outlet bolt, some go to a boss on the front of the intake. Also, all long water pumps aren't the same; some have the boss for the bracket farther forward than others, and depending on the bracket you have, you might need a spacer.

That's exactly how I should have described it. Its like my alternator is just a little bit too small. So the larger bracket, was it used in serpentine setups or something? I thought it came off of a carb or tbi car, but don't remember real well. Guess it could have been tpi. Looking in jegs and places, they list one part for mid seventies up to 1984 or so, but I can't come up with any change then that would explain it. Oh well. I guess it doesn't matter. I've got the wrong part and will have to replace it. Thanks for the explaination.

I think in 85 all of them got the ribbed (Like serpentine, but still have to tighten the belt with the "slot" in the bracket.) It is a better setup. I don't think the bracket chenged though, I changed to the ribbed belt, and kept my stock bracket. Maybe that's why they said through 84, but who knows!
