Rear Main Seal???

How much in estimation would this cost at a local body shop I'm bringing my car over this afternoon and am wondering how much it would be my father had a Suzuki Samuri and he said it costed about 300-400 dollars. and that was from a dealer how much would this cost for my 87 Iroc

Depends, what kind of engine? Is it a two piece RMS or one piece? If it's a two piece, the engine needs to be disassembled to get to it, since it is in the rear main bearing cap. Read as very $$$ for just a RMS change.

Don't confuse the RMS for the rear oil pan seal, that's different.

The seal on anything with a TPI but a 1985 should be a one-piece, which requires removal of the transmission and flex plate. I'd hate to guess the cost.

Incidentally, there is a procedure for installing a two-piece seal with the crank still in the engine, but the oil pan still has to come off to get the main caps loose. Not a fun task in a ThirdGen if the engine is still in the vehicle.

oops not a a body shop hehehe dummy me.....ummm It's an 87 305 TPI with th700R4 trans sooo would it be an 2 piece or 1 piece seal??? Hopefully they woul'nt have to remove the engine...Don't they just have drop the trans and just remove the old and put in the new???

Its a one piece. The tranny shop here wanted $125 to R+R the trans. Figure 30-35 for the seal, and probably another 50 in labor. Thats a guess of course, the shop you choose will have their own price
