Quoted from Haynes
"The coolant temperature indicator system is composed of a light mounted in the instrument panel and a coolant temperature sending unit located at the left rear corner of the cylinder head on L4 engine and at the front of the left cylinder head on V6 and V8 engines. If a temperature gauge is included in the instrument cluster, the temperature sending unit is replaced by a transducer!"

That's for the temperature guage, the CTS is for the ECM which is a completely different sensor. The CTS is where I previously said it is.</font>

86, that doesn't surprise me. I think those Haynes books are far too vague, full of mistakes and when you get to anything really technical, they refer you to "your local GM dealer or GM shop manual".
Also, various years/engines/induction systems had various sensors in differing places which are often overlooked in the Haynes manuals. In fact, recently someone with a MPFI SD V6 had a Haynes book say his SES code 32 referred to his "MAF" when in fact it should have said "MAP".
Personally, other than REAL BASIC DIY repairs of a fairly minor level, I have little use for the Haynes Manuals. Nothing beats a good GM Shop Manual for your specific year of car. I purchased my GM Shop Manual the same time I bought my GTA new in 1991.

In the Haynes manual, on page 320 Fig. 13.41 shows the general location where the CTS is for the ECM. Item 'D'. I agree, these books are way too vague to get a good reference from. And the wiring schematics for the 82-84 cars are awful!!
