No start! Bout to sell!!

Ok can someone help with this stupid crap please?

car had a carb fire about a year ago, i let it sit, and just like a couple months ago started to fix it, replaced distributor, spark plugs, wires, wiring harness....EVERYTHING....the thing wont start, but does crank, starter is tested good.

I checked, checked, and checked again on the timing and everything is fine, firing order is fine, its a carb motor and i see fuel goin into motor, fuel pump is on, and i can get spark...but it just wont start!!!!!!!!!!! any suggestions??

Yeah check the compression, oil, and is the gas new or has it been sitting for as long as the car? Also how did you check for spark. Also is your timing set right? Try these things and post an update. Good Luck

That's a bad situation to be in... I've been there a few times in the past w/ POS's... and found that 'small steps' are the best way to procede.

Please define "I'm getting spark" for me.
Spark is actually coming out of the spark plugs if removed from the cylinders and attached to the wires?

Seems to me, that if it's cranking AND you're getting fuel and spark... that it would at least ATTEMPT to fire.

Even if your distributor was 180* in backwards... it would fire, sputter, etc.

Is your timing all out of whack?

Did you MAKE sure to double check the firing order ?

Have you tried to start it w/ starting fluid in the carb?

This might be a dumb question, but how long do you crank the engine for? And when you crank do you put the gas to the floor? If you have replaced all fluids, and new plugs n wires, rotor, dist cap, there's not all too much else that would really deteriorate in a year.

The reason that I ask is because often times with Carb'd engines they have a hard time starting after being cooled down for a while (I have to crank for a while on mine if i leave it sitting in the cold for about 4 hours lol)... also, shoot some carb cleaner down your carbeurator, if it tries firing up with the carb cleaner, then you probably have a clogged jet. The fuel that had been sitting in there for a year probably turned into varnish and that stuff is thick, espescially for a jet that isnt a very big hole.

Firing order is correct, and my timing is fine (i think), i get tdc but i dont know if its on the compression stroke or not. I put a screwdriver in the plug boot where it connects to the spark plug and held it close to metal and the thing sparked.

It is a brand new carb so clogging isnt a problem....

I crank it for about 5 seconds, cuz then i get this clicking from the starter like its hitting the teeth of the flywheel. I push the gas a little to be sure not to flood

I'm pretty certain that the 'problem' lies somewhere in the above statement.

A 'clicking starter' usually means 1 of 2 things.
1) You've got a BAD battery connection... which most usually is caused by dirty battery cables/battery terminals/ground points.

2) Your starter solenoid is going out, but quite possibly affected by the above "NON-shiny metal TO shiny metal connection.

I would remove the battery cables and use sandpaper/wire brush to ensure there is a 'shiny metal to shiny metal' connection at all 4 connection points (2 at the battery, 1 each at the alternator bracket & starter).
Then, if you're still having 'cranking/clicking' issues... that means that your starter soleniod is going out OR your starter is improperly shimmed (which I doubt).

TRY spraying 'starting fluid' (a few short blasts) down the carb after the battery cables are shiny metal to shiny metal.
Charge battery to full capacity.

That's a good start to see if you can crank longer than '5 seconds'... sometimes 'out of time engines' take longer than a few seconds to fire (if really out of time).

my car is perfectly tuned and fine, in the morning when it's cold, it takes more than 5 seconds to start it, clicking means bad battery connection, or low battery, try jumping it, push and let off the gas a few times, then turn over, and repeat

just gotta WAIL on the car when you start it. Turn the ignition and pump the gas like there's no tommorow. If you DO flood the spark plugs, then that can be remedied for cheap. (Do this after you make sure your battery is about fully charged, and the connections to it are clean.

I'll try to clean up the connections and see what happens.
