92 Z28 Running Temp
I just purchased 92 Z28 305 TPI. I noticed that sitting in traffic the temp went to 230 but dropped down to 180 once I started driving. 230 seemed high but I am not sure what the car should run at. Before I have it looked at I would appreciate some info.
Thanks, Stacy

Yes believe it or not that is totally normal. GM designed it to work that way. So there's nothing wrong.

that sounds about right. thermostat should open at 195 (stock, but it sounds like you have a 180* thermostat) and keeps the temp above 195 (or 180 in your case) and the fan comes on around 220-230 and keeps the temp below that.. while driving, there's just enough cool air to keep the temp down at it's low end, and sitting still, it should rise.

220 is when the fan should kick on with the stock chip in the eprom. It is a bit hot for performance though for sure. There are a ton of mods you can do to have your fan(s) manually kick on with the flip of a switch if you search the archives. Water wetter will help some, and get a cooler stat. Your car will thank you!

If you're ambitious, changing the water pump to a high-performance unit like one from Stewart Components can make a world of difference with the fans kicking in sooner.
