Oil Pressure Question!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just changed my oil about two weeks ago to Mobil 1 synthetic(10w30). A couple of days ago I noticed that when I first start my car after setting all night my oil pressure gauge is maxed out. After it warms for about 10-15min it drops to 40-45. When running down the road at 60mph my oil pressure is at 45-50. I also noticed some ping or tapping tonight like my timing was to high. I just reset my timing to stock about 1 week ago so I don't think it's off. Anyway is my oil pressure way to high? My friend thinks so. Why?

my oil pressure does the same thing.. it jumps all the way up after shaking around a little til the car has been running for about 10 minutes then hovers around 45... seems kinda odd

Car: 1987 Trans Am
Engine: LT1
Transmission: T-56
Axle/Gears: 10 Bolt SLP Torsen, 3.73 ratio
Befire getting concerned about anything in oil pressure be sure to connect a known good mechanical oil pressure gauge and observe that! My oil pressure is often off the scale of my digital dash, It has ben this way since I got the car 2.5 years ago! I haven't seen any catastrophic engine failure yet (knock on wood!)

The reason I ask is I had a new sending unit put in about 4 months ago and my gauge wasn't doing this before. My first thought was the Synthetic oil was breaking loose all the buildup of gunk inside my engine and maybe some of it has gotten on the Pickup Sreen but I ruled that out because it would be backwards, my oil pressure would be running lower not higher. So why would it be running so high or is this to high?

Even though almost all oils are multi-viscosity they still get thinner as they heat up. So your oil pressure will decrease as the oil thins out while warming up. Unless your getting high enough to bypass the filter. In that case the oil pressure would go up to the bypass setting and stay their all the time or until the oil is hot enough to bring the pressure back down. The old rule of thumb is 10 PSI for every 1000 RPM is required for a healthy engine. I used to run 125 PSI relief on a Cleveland because their oiling systems sucked.

Flaash is correct about oils getting les viscous and flowing more easily when heated - mineral oils at least. Synthetic oils are a lot more thermally stable than mineral oils, and will maintain their viscosity when heated. Also, as teh engine gets warmer and all clearances are tightened up from thermal expansion of the materials, the pressure can actually increase with a thermally stable oil.

I phreaked out when I first saw the high pressure on a hot engine, and replaced a gauge sending unit, verified the pressure with a mechanical gauge, and then another because I didn't believe the first. I think I understand it now.

Thanks guys I feel better now. I didn't know if too much Oil Pressure would mess something up or what but I think I'm O.K. Thanks again.

What kind of oil filter are you using. I have noticed that if I use Purolator One (crap) that I get relatively normal oil pressure. but when I use K&N (kick a$$) my oil pressure rarely runs lower than 60.

I'm using AC Delco. I use to think an Oil Filter was just an Oil Filter till I read this article someone posted a little while back. http://members.nbci.com/minimopar/oilfilterstudy.html

I HATE Fram filters. I had one of their filters come lose twice. I even tightened it down with an oil filter wrench. The next one that I replaced that one with came apart on the inside. A guy I talked to that works with Alied Signal says they are junk. AC Delco now.

Car: 1991 Camaro RS
Engine: L03 305 V-8 (for now ;) )
Transmission: T-5 5 speed
Axle/Gears: stock... whatever that means :)
I dont think its anything to worry about. I used to own an 82 5.0 Mustang (Please, just shoot me!) and a 82 Monte Carlo that had a 350 installed in it by the previous owner. When I put Mobil 1 oil in them, I immediately noticed a 5-7 PSI drop in oil pressure, AND lower oil temps. The synthetic oil is much easier to pump, and it cools the bearing surfaces better. I love the stuff myself, and I still use it today in my 98 Grand Prix GTP. And my fiance(?) uses it in her Dodge Neon (she cant handle power yet).

Calm down, its nothing to worry about! I hope you dont have an oil leak anywhere because Mobil 1 is EXPENSIVE!!!

Holla!

Just like everyone else said, don't worry. And, for another oil filer option, I've used Mobil 1 filters since they came out - they've worked out great and not lowered my oil pressure at all.
