first thing i thought of is why you'd want to know? like most car related things ther isn't a set answer, but i'd not let mine run over the 240* range. i know you'll find people who will say they've went 300* with no problems nd others that blew head gaskets at 200*.

I let mine go to who knows where past 300 and nothing happened. But i wasn't watching the temp gauge so i don't know how long it was at 300+. Surely after i saw it i did go park the car and try to see what was wrong. Never goes past 220 now
i feel alot better with that kinda insurance.

burnout- read the whole message, I don't think that was intent.
I've had mine to 250+ plenty of times because of cooling problems. I haven't yet blown a head gasket(thank god). Since I installed the dual fans I have no worries now.

jeez i never run mine that hot. It stays at about 185 most of the time, but in the summer if I try and use my A/C it will climb past 220, and I gotta shut off the A/C. I had to install a heater control valve just to keep the temp stable in the summer.

I ask because if I'm sitting at a light or in stop and go traffic, it will get hot real fast. I usually turn the car off if I know I'll be sitting for a while. I plan on rebuilding the engine in about another 25,000 miles, but I wanted to make sure that my head gasket will survive til then.

I think that you need to pay attention more to your constant heat. My car always runs around 175, with a 180 degree thermostat and a manual fan switch I use w/ the A/C and in slow traffic, I had a collant hose blow and the temp reached 270, nothing happened. I think cuz then engine has been in good health at running cool temperatures all the time. If your car is always around 220-25o BEWARE!, if it gets much hotter it ain't gonna make it! wire up a manual fan switch, and/or drill to small holes in the rim of your thermostat, thats helped me run cool at all times.

i don't think small block chevys really ever have head gaskets blow. how often have you seen a blown head gasket on a stock or properly build SBC? i don't think i have ever seen a blown head gasket. i'm sure it can happen, but on REAL engines that rarely happens. now those buzzing turd ricers, they blow headgaskets all the time when they get hot.
