I have a 86 trans am with a 305/tpi and a 700-r4 tranny.i have searched all over this site and the internet to try to find a replacement motor, longblock, shortblock or anything for the 305.Does anyone know where i could get a rebuild kit.i saw one on summitracing.com but ih had 8.5 to 1 compression ratio i thought this was to low and would mess up the computer.Any help would be appriciated.

In your seach for either a complete engine or short block, consider changing to a 350. They are a lot more available, will provide equal highway fuel mileage, only 1/2-1 MPG lower city mileage, and a lot more power and aftermarket parts availability. They are likely going to be cheaper, too.

The only other differences you will need to accomodate will be a different ECM PROM and the larger, 22lb/hr injectors. Of course, there are a lot of sources for the injectors, and either a factory '87 L-98 (350) PROM or custom burned PROM can be had for your potential 350 setup for well under $100. The factory calibrators (PROMs) are around $60. I'm thinking that there are several people on this board that can burn a custom PROM with factory 350 parameters for almost nothing. The L-98 binary code files are all over the 'net for free, and a PROM itself is about a $10 item.
