Long rod 406 camshaft

What camshafts are you guys using in your long rod mini rammed 406s and what kind of hp and torque are you getting.

A long rod 400 will be the same as a short rod 400. Call comp cams and ask them for a recommendation.

I disagree with that but thank you for your response. I guess I must be the only one here using 6inch rods in a 406.

The differences in a short rod and a long rod are imperceptible. They are essentially the same in all but all out race motors, with really hightech components, and an all out tune. Your not going to get anywhere close without thousand of dollars in dyno testing.

Yea, I doubt you'll have problems unless you have some really beefy aftermarket rods.

I know what you are getting at, but I wouldn't worry about it too much.

SInce no one answered your post.

I am running a 400 block with 6" eagle rods, SRP Flattop pistons and am using a Comp XE solid roller with 242/242, .603/.603 lift on a 112lsa with a MiniRam intake. I have played with cam timing first installing the cam at 110 degs on the intake center. I have recently advanced the cam to 108 degrees.

I like the cam installed at 108. Installed at 110, the motor makes peak hp at around 6800 which is higher than I want to spin the motor.

Don't have dyno or track numbers yet but it does feel stronger than the 383 I had in the car previously and it ran 11.61@118.

Yeah but he's running EFI so he needs a an LSA of 112 or so.

If it was me i would use a cam like i am going to use in my new 383. It is a comp XR274-12 solid roller cam with 112 lsa. But the solid roller cam may or may not be happy and work with a FI knock sensor.

The cam I have is a 112 lsa. I was speaking of the installed position of the cam in relation to the crank.

In order to chosse the correct cam, it is best to have cylinder head flow numbers. My Brodix heads have a very high intake to exhaust ratio. This is why I chose a single pattern grind.

Thank you thats what I was looking for let me know how it turns out,do you program your proms yourself. How much vaccum do you have at idle. I have afr heads the springs are only good for 600 lift.

Guys, I think he was asking wether he would have to run a small base circle cam or not, I guess it would depend on the rods.

MR KIDD - Yes I tuned my 406 myself. I have a DFI. I have not taken vacuum readings but the idle is very stable.

My cam may sound like it's on the large size but the advertised duration is only 280 degs.

I actually stepped the cam down from what I ran in my 383. In the 383, I had an XE Solid roller 248/248, .610/.610 lift. That cam idled well also.

I have no regrets about going with the long rod. I had a machine shop build the short block less oil system. I had the block zero decked which when combined with my flattop pistons and 68cc chambered heads has a compression ratio of 11.0-1.

This is one of the reasons that I am able to use a larger cam and still maintain good idle characterisitics and pass Ohio Emissions.

Thanks for the replys the reason for the ? was I already have a hydraulic roller in the engine now 226/232 532/543 112Lsa I put 1.6 roller rockers on it the engine seemed to like that. I have notice that the long rod 406s seem to respond well to solid roller
cams in the range your running and I wanted to see what some of the other 406 users where using. I am running the miniram on mine and I tune mine myself.I would like to see some cam specs and some hp and torgue and 1/4 mile times. THANKS

Why don't you just call up Comp, Crane, Crower, Lunati and all the rest of the cam manufacturers and ask for a recommendation.
