2.8->3.4 swap gone awry.... please help....
Hi guys. I normally reside at the V-6 board, but some of them sent me over here with my questions (guess they got tired of me
). This might get a little long, so grab a bee-- um... soda, and relax.
I just did a 2.8->3.4 swap, in my '87 Camaro. When I first completed it, buttoned everything up, filled the motor with all neccesary fluids and such, it actually ran! However... It didn't run right. It kinda bogged down when I "snapped" on the throttle. In order for it to rev up, I'd have to push the gas halfway (or more), and hold it, and it would eventually get there. So, I set the timing, changed the spark plugs, and checked for vaccum leaks. No good. Still did it. I did notice that the car smoked when just sitting there, revved up to about 3500. So, I looked under the car after it started smoking, and the catalytic converter was glowing red hot.
Now, this lead me to believe that it was clogged up. So, I go out there with a big ol' sledgehammer, grinder, and a prybar and cut it off. Now it won't start! I'm only thinking that it could be a couple things. I'm really doubting that it could be because of low backpressure. But, again, I'm not sure.
Let me give you a little history on the car, so you have a better idea of this:
-Blew up the 2.8 in June '00
-Got the 3.4 with 50K mi. on it in Jan. '01
-Finally got it in, and started for the first time in late March '01
-First time out, a big wire loom melted to the pass. side exhaust manifold, melted the fuel pump wire, grounded it out, and popped the fuse... (had to tow it home....)
So, the car actually sat, with a tank full of gas for, about 9-10 months. Maybe the fuel pump, filter, or lines are clogged? I'm not sure...
So, what I'm really asking for is some ideas on what you guys think is going on. I'm stuck, and like I said, I've got my ideas, and I just want to hear yours (unless you've got the answer... then I want that
)
Thanks for any help, I really appreciate it...

I would be willing to Wager you are Running Rich.
That would explain the Glowing Cat, the Smoking exhuast, and Sorta explain the bog.
As far as teh car Not starting w/o the cat< that has to be because you srewed up something else in the process of removing it with the delicate tools you describe.
there is No way that the Cat being present or non present will effect the car's trying to start.
Hope that Helps, I don't know enough about the 6's iduction to get any more specific Than that.

his car sounds exactly like mine did when my knock sensor unplugged and the car went into limp-home mode... smoking cat, stinky smell, running very rich, timing retarded..
the timing is definitely way retarded, this will explain the exhaust manifolds/cat (unburned fuel in the exhaust), hard to start and when it did run; the lack of throttle response can be attributed to this.......

)Now... as for the knock sensor. I'm gonna go check the Chilton's and Haynes manuals, but, can anyone give me a idea of where it's at? I've been over the sensors a bunch of times, just checking to make sure everything's hooked up, and it is (as far as I can see)... so, maybe it's hidden somewhere that I didn't see... thanks again guys....

The knock sensor should not be preventing the engine from starting. It could be what caused the cat to burn itself up, if you were experiencing detonation causing the cat to work harder to burn the excess fuel.
It soulds like you have come across another problem. I'd start with the basics, fuel pressure, spark, compression (maybe the engine get too hot and blew a head gasket, no, I'm not wishing that on you!) and check to see if the injectors are getting their signal. I can't think of anything else right off, but maybe after I get some sleep, and maybeget some more feedbackon things you've found.
Good Luck!
