valve cover gasket
valve cover gasket
Hey guys. I have to pull off the valve covers to adjust for the 'ticking' noise from the engine. Do I have to replace the valve cover gaskets, or if I'm careful (and lucky), can I reuse the old ones? Also I'm putting on an open element (K&N) and I'm wondering if there might be any overheating issues with the engine not getting any outside 'cool' air. Any help would be great. Thanks!

I haven't put on an open element setup but you shouldn't have any problems with the car overheating. One thing to do to help get some cooler air in is to remove the gasket from the rear of the hood. Thats a high pressure area and you'll get a lot of cool air into the car.
The valve cover gaskets, depending on the type of material should be reusable. You might want to grab a spare set anyways just in case. After you put the valve covers back on just check for leaking. If it is leaking then change them out. Its not like getting to the valve covers is difficult anyways.

hey lordlexus,
your best bet is to go down to a parts store and get a set of the Fel-Pro rubber valvecover gaskets. they're better than the stockers, and will be able to be re-used after a thorough cleaning each time the valve-covers are removed.
on my website I have an open-element aircleaner tech article, check it out if you're curious how one of my users did it. here's the link: http://www.iroc-z.org/tech/carburetor/openelement
i'm originally from Red Deer, damn I miss that place..

One little trick is to silicone/glue the gaskets JUST to the valve cover. That way you can pull the covers WITH the gasket and not have to worry about them sticking to the head and tearing!
