195 heads worth it?

my co worker has a set of 195 heads off of a 350. he just had them RE-done. he said he would sell them to me for about $400, now the question is, are they worth that much?

on the other hand i have my 305 heads layin in my basement. how much would it cost to get those RE-done, pardon my bad grammer

No; but there is such a thing as 1.94" intake valves. That's the factory stock size in most 350 heads. Nothing special there.

The value of a set of heads is in what castings they are, and what machine work has been done (or not done) to them. There's no way to know whether $400 is a good price without knowing the specifics. There are 350 heads, with 1.94" intake valves no less, that I would pay somebody not to give me if I had to do that to keep them off of my property. There are very few stock 350 heads with any size of intake valves that I would pay $400 for, unless I knew exactly what they were and what work they had and who did it.

The 305 heads could possibly be a good way to go, depending on what castings they are and what you're putting them together with.

Get the casting numbers and post them, and tell us the rest of your engine combo; lots of us here have lots of experience with heads, and can tell you whether either set is appropriate.

i am not sure of the casting number on the heads for $400, the 305 heads i have , the casting number is #354434. those 305 heads are off of a '76 305 my dad had laying around.

now my engine setup is, '79 4 bolt main sbc 350. i recently bought a cam from comp. the grind number is #268H-10. it is pretty mild. what i want to do with this motor is to haev a mild build up, mild because of it being a daily driver. the 305 heads havent been touched (yet) by a machine. the 350 heads for $400 have supposedly been "redone"

if you need more specs on the cam let me know

Those are terrible 305 heads, among the worst; might even be the ones with the 1.72" intake valves. Definitely not suitable for anything resembling a performance buildup.

The cam is an old familiar one; I've owned a couple in my own cars over the years in fact.

It would be helpful to know the casting # of the $400 heads, like the one you got for the 305 heads; that number tells all about what the heads' "bones" are. With any given casting, there's only so much you can do; so it's critical to know what they really are. It would also be useful to know the pistons in your 350, whcih might or might not still be the OE ones; as that will dramatically affect the compression ratio, and therefore which heads you should be looking for. It's not impossible that your pistons and the heads you're looking at would be unsuitable in combination with each other.

the pistons appear to be different that the stock pistons. they are flat top with two valve reliefs.

i will try to get the casting number on the $400 dollar heads by tomm.

just out of curiosity, what 305 heads are good? i also heard that the tbi heads are terrible too.
