Oil Filter BLOWOUT!~!
I just put at Carb'ed 355 in my 92RS and it was just idleing in the driveway when I filled the countryside with smoke. After the smoke cleared i realized their was 6 quarts of oil on the ground under my car. I checked where it was coming from and it looks as though the o=ring on the filter blew out the side, but i know it's not because i tightened it too tight.
I was just wondering if anyone had ever heard of this before and it so, what causes it and how can i fix it.
Thanks,
25thredrs

Occasionally an old gasket will stay on the engine when a filter is removed. If not detected, and a new filter mounted to it, it will blow out.
What brand filter was it?

I've seen this happen before on an old ford...the bypass stuck in the pump except of spraying oil out of the O-ring it expanded the oil filter until it blew up

Was the case of the filter expanded? I don't think a sticking bypass will cause a filter to blow out unless it was -10 degrees out and you revved the snot out of the motor when you fired it up. I have been running a intentionally blocked oil bypass for a few years now and have not expanded or blown out an oil filter.
Most likely the o-ring was effed up before you installed it (manufacturing defect) or it got effed up when you installed it (maybe too dry).
I would put on a new filter and try again......jack up the car so you can watch the oil filter if it starts leaking again.

Describe your filter installation process.

I took the new oil filter out and lubed the 0=ring with the new oil and installed it snug but now too tight...after looking at the car after the oil blew out with the filter still on it, the o=ring has pushed out the side like it slipped or something..but the filter does not look as though it's swelled up or anything....Could this have anything to do with the engine block??? what if the surface is "OFF" and the oil filter is not making a complete, uniform, seal?
Thanks for the responces guys.,

I'll assume you meant "not too tight".
3/4 to 1 turn after gasket contact is the typical filter manufacturer recommendation.
Since you've had this happen with two different filters, you either have an installation process problem, or a mount problem.

Do they always blow out on the same side?
If so, your bypass valve / spin-on adapter is bent. Probably got wacked at some point in the handling of the motor.
Get another one off of a junk motor or something.

Would it be a better idea to get a new spin on adapter or to get a remote oil filter adapter...but if i do that then will i still have the problem with the current spin on adapter..is the bypass considered the same thing as the spin on adapter??

The adapter would screw on to the by-pass, just like the filter. So, no, that's not the answer (assuming that's the problem).

OK...it sounds like it's the bypass but let me just add this...it only does it when it's full with 6 qrts of oil.....it's a brand new moroso 6 qrt pan so it should hold 6 correct?

Perhaps we should define terms. The bypass is the aluminum piece that bolts on to the block with two small bolts. The spin-on adapter to which RB referred is a pipe nipple that screws into the bypass and on to which the filter screws. A remote filter adapter would also screw on to the pipe nipple adapter.
The part that would be most likely to bend would be the pipe nipple adapter. The bypass would more likely crack than bend. One or both may be your problem.
There's no particular reason for the o-ring to blow out based on the level of oil in the pan. When/why did you have something other than 6 quarts in it?

OK. i got ya...thanks for clearing that up. The engine has done this once before and after it did it i just put 5 qrts in it and it didn't do it...but like you said... i think that was just coincidence. i Dont think the amount of oil should affect it. Tell me if this is a possibility...When i bought the oil pan i bought the stock volume oil pickup and i told the people who assembled my longblock to put a stock volume pump in it...but what if they accidentally put a high pressure pump in it? Could that possibly cause this problem? I don't know whether they did or not but i'm just asking whether this could be the cause...I need to call them to find out.
Thanks for the valuable info,
