SES light came on today

Hi all,

Drove my car last night to a show and it was fine. This morning I went out to start it and it didn't crank right up. It turned over several times before it finally caught on. Once it did start, I got the SES light. I had a show to go to today and drove up the street to the gas station came back home and was not going to go. Turned the key the next time and it fired right up as usual (except this morning first thing) and no SES light.

So I drove it to the show and it was running fine, no codes, gauges all fine. Sat at the show for a few hours and when I tried to start it, same dry start, not as bad as in the morning but needed to turn it over 3 times. SES light now on. Drove it for a bit and thought I would stop after a short distance, turn it off and start again and it would be gone. No such luck. Fired right up but still light on. Babied it home and stopped it and then fired it right back up and no SES light.

Went out a couple of hours later and cranked it and had the SES so I turned it off and read codes. It is pulling a 24 which from the Haynes is a VSS which if car not moving ignore. Also pulling a 54 which describes carburator and also says check ECM. Drove it tonight and the SES light is still off and on. Very intermittant.

Sorry for the long winded description but hoping it helps to solve this issue.

thanks
Scott

What kind of car is it? 54 could be a problem with the fuel pump circuit. That would definatly explain the hard starting.

I would have to agree with the fuel pump. My 89 Iroc had trouble starting like that, turned out that the pump was going out, and there is like a checkvalve to keep the fuel lines full, my valve was going out and would drain the fuel lines. When I tried to start it, the pump was having to prime the lines again...hope that made sense...

Your code 54 = Fuel pump circuit (low voltage) and your code 24 = Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) and can be set if there is not constant voltage on that circuit. Just a thought
