305 engine rebuild

Ok, I can get a real cheap 305 engine. I know it runs and that it runs smooth. I just want to rebuild it back to almost stock specs. Where can I get a kit? The 305 is out of a 1986 Z28 TPI. I can get the whole car for 700 at most and it is mechanically great but has no title. I know I will loose the roller setup but it is only a temp engine for a few years. I was thinking while I am rebuilding it, why not hop it up just a little and get around 250hp. Summit claims a 40 hp increase with their "special" cam, 204*/214* and .420/.442, and an ADS super chip on a stock eninge, that would bring me to 230hp. Are any of the Compucams better then this and what INEXPENSIVE mods can I do to add 20 hp?

Just bought a 1987 Black 305 TPI 5spd IROC, seems to be fully leaded, but can't find RPO codes, any other places besides the center console, oh yeah it has the overhead console WITH a camaro flashlight!

any parts store or machine shop will have a rebuild kit for your engine.

Camshaft XE262 is a good match for a 305, Edelbrock headers are rumored to be great for the 305 also (more torque!!) and are also rumored to be a good fit. That's about $450 or so for around 70 hp.

ok, will the cam work with the TPI without having to fool with the prom and if i don't fool with the prom with that still give me 70 hp? If not, would anyone know where i could get a cheap prom made up or one that is already set up for the 262 cam.

I just put in the summit cam kit you mentioned. Everything went smooth and at the end the car started right up and idles fine. It does give alot more power than the stock cam.

I already had an ADS chip in the car from the previous owner. I highly doubt that any real gains are from the chip. All of my gains are from the cam, SLP headers and SLP cat back. At the same time I ported the plenum and cleaned up the enterances and exits of the runners, and gasket matched the plenum openings to the runners. You would be surprised at what a crappy job GM did with casting these parts. I have no idle problems, no hessitation off the line where it used to bog if you hit it hard off the line, and the car easily pulls to 5K. With the things I did there really is a noticeable difference, but if you want you can go with a slightly bigger cam and not have any problems but I wanted the car to remain street freindly and not a garage queen. I also have to worry since my wife likes to make excuses on why she should take the T/A out to do her running around town therefore I didn't want to make it too radical. If you are going to be changing motors in the car you should look into a 350 since all of the money you are spending into this 305 can yeild alot better results. I did my 305 instead cause the previous owner put a reman. AC Delco 305 bored .030 in it only 10k ago and saw no need in getting rid of a perfectly good motor.

well, i need other parts from that car and the 305 in it is fine( I claimed 56,000 miles), what I am thinking is I will just clean it up, put in new valve seals, maybe re ring it, and change to the Summit IROC cam. The 350 will come when I have more money lfor it, i would still ike to know if the 262 cam will work without a chip for future mods.
