question, please read

i just got my first car, 89 firebird, (i know nothing about cars, but am learning) i am thinking about pimping this thing out, as mush as i can, fix the rust, new paint, new hood, i am wondering if i decide to stick in a new engine, maybe a 350, maybee 383, would i be able to just use everything i modded, like air filter, headers, etc..., or no, also how much would somehting like this cost (engine that is)

Forget the 383. Too much machine work with more hassles of thing to go wrong. Find a 400 small block, bore it 30 over and get some quality parts(pistons, headers, manifold) stuff like that. For the engine built and install included probably $3000 - $4000 depending on how crooked a performance shop you go to.

Or insted of a 383 you could go with a 377. 400 small destroked with a 350 crank. If you put some good parts in it and have it balanced you will have a engine that will have gobs of horses and KILLER REV'S.

My advice is if it's you're first "learning" experience, stick with the 305. Play with it, mod it, then when after you get your feet wet, look into another motor.

If you're really anxious for HP now, think of a crate motor.

For a 305? if you want to waste your money
open element
vortec heads
edelbrock performer
get rid of emissions
flowmaster
headers
y-pipe
bigger injectors or
EFI conversion
bigger cam
bottle
supercharger
possibilities are endless, but dont waste your time ewith a 305, if your going to mod it out, buy parts you can switch over to your crate motor

Trent,

If you really want to "pimp it out" maybe this should be your guide:

If you want to make some power with your 305, stick around. Read the archives. Check the Tech Articles. You can get a lot of good ideas and advice here to help your cause. The 305 is plenty of engine for the little car, propoerly applied.

Forget rims and paint. Do it right. Build a killer engine to last the work from inside out. I see too many of these flashy painted or 18 chromed rim SVT mustangs getting waxed by someones summer project primered 69 Camaro. Makes me lauh at how much they spent on looks with a wimpy engine to back it up.

That 377 ci engine is a great though. Good job idrag2
