random stalling, 92 LO3 305

hey guys, I'm new to this, just registered...first post

I just got a 1992 LO3 305 TBI. For some reason, the car just randomly stalls. It starts up great. Then idles fine but if you let it idle for a little while (like 5 minutes), sometimes it will stall, sometimes it will be fine. Also as I drive, the tach flucuates sometimes. It will jump from like 2,000 to 1,000 back to 2,000 within like a second. It has also even stalled two or three times while driving at like 30 mph. It stalls while driving only after accelerating then when you let off the gas the rpm's just drop all the way down. If anyone has any clue, please let me know. Thanks, Jimmy

My lo3 did that when the fuel pump was dieing. I would look into your fuel situation and see whats going on. I hope it isn't the fuel pump....cause most of us know its a PITA.

Sounds like maybe a fuel pump. But also check the idle air control (IAC). Sometimes they can be a problem. Usually it will be hard starting when they act up, but ya never know.

When my pump was dieing it would start right up. Then the idle would go crazy. It would jump around and if I sat there and revved it up sometimes it would smooth out and sometimes it wouldn't. Then for 2 months it stopped and ran pretty good. Then one day the pump was completely dead and that was it. Changed the fuel pump and the car ran perfect.

Whew... dropping the rear end and gas tank as your first project... well, at least you'll be learning a lot. Welcome aboard!

Fuel pump was my first project. I did it in 2 days.

Many projects have spawned since.
