i think i seriously screwed up...

A bolt managed to break off in the manifold while i was bolting down the carb.

Then to make matters worse, the easy-out bit broke off in the hole while getting the bolt out.

What do i do now?

I think i should take the manifold off, stick it on a drill press and see if i cant bore out the hole, and then thread it.

Does anyone else have any ideas???

(and dont say, shouldnt have done it in the first place, i heard it all day )

Thanks to anyone who can help me...

it is extremely hard to get an easy out, a regular drill bit won't touch it, a hardend bit won't last to long. i have seen my boss get them out, but i don't see how. that's what years and years of being a mechanic and breaking **** will do. it's possible, depending on how bad it is, you might not be able to get it out. hopefully that isn't the case.

too late now but you should of forgot the easy out. there is a very narrow application range where they are the tool of choice and your broken bolt wasn't it. you'd been way ahead to drill and tap instead of use the easy out. now since you did and you're pretty much intercoursed the thing to do would be weld a nut on the stub and back it out with a wrench. if the nut comes off weld another on till it's out.

yea, i agree with the welding a nut on trick. i have used the same trick countless times and it works wonderfully, normally the first time. otherwise, buy a FEW titanium drill bits and make patience your virtue...

good luck

What kind of a manifold is this?

If it's a stock LG4 manifold or something, it isn't worth spending money on to save it. Replace it.

Easyouts are a PITA to remove, welding is the prefered first choice, but if that fails or the thing is broken off deep then the manifold may need to be taken to a REAL machine shop with a milling machine, they can mount up the intake and use a carbide endmill cut the easyout out, I've done this many times at the shop I work at, a carbide endmill will cut through an easyout like butter, but it won't be cheap doing it that way.

I guess you were making sure that carb wasn't going to fly away LOL!

I'd be surprised if you didn't warp or crack the carb base plate.

the carb is fine, the bolt was half way threaded then broke off...

also, there is no stub of the bolt, it broke fluch with the manifold, as did the easy out bit...

yes, its an LG4 intake manifold...

thanks for all the suggestions, if i cant get it out, i guess i ll just get a new manifold...

Get a rotary tool (or a hacksaw) and cut a slot in the part of the bolt that you can reach... then you might be able to back it out with a screwdriver or a flat screwdriver-tip on a ratchet. Its worked for me.
