chattering is usually associated with clutches. If you mean 'popping' in the exhaust like backfiring, it's probably your diverter valve from your Air pump. Good time to remove it.

No it is not the clutch, it is a pretty constant chatter every 3 seconds coming from the smog pump. It is not back firing in the exaust, any idea please help

how do you know it is coming from your smog pump? take the belt off to see if it is. by the way, what year and engine do you have, because usually, chatter, if not the clutch is really associated with carburators running on the wrong air/fuel mixture. if you have a V-belt config, take the belt off and runn it to see if thats your problem. let us know

i used a mechanic stethescope and it seems as though it's coming from the smog pump. it is a serpentine belt and i haven't had time to take it off and check the smog pulley. I got a new smog pump and will try putting it on. the chattering is an accesory and has nothing to do with the motor. Any ideas???

oh, its a zz4 350 with tuned port injection so it isn't the carb, also i'm sure it is not my motor, someone said it could be a water pump though
