Cleaning carbon buildup?
Hey all,
I think I remember reading here about using tolulene (as a fuel additive) or something for cleaning valves and stuff on an older, gummed up engine. Thinking about putting a used stock 350 in my 5 speed car and wondered if there is such a "miracle" cure
.
thanks for any help

Looking for a V8, preferably 4 or 5 speed Camaro with NO T-tops (wanna trade?)

I did a search on tolulene but didn't find anything...new keyword is water
thanks
Clem
ps, I'm used to working on engines that are lucky if they see 500 miles
. I'm really more of a chassis guy.

. I'm really more of a chassis guy. I remember watching the show "motorweek" a while back and Pat Goss did a segment on this subject, showing different options. One was of a machine that circulates finely crushed pecan shells or walnut shells through the engine to clean up all of the build-up. I'm not sure of the name of the equipment or how exactly it operates.
Has anyone heard of this?

The pecan shell thing is actually a regular service in the BMW product line, to be performed at soem interval in the maintenance schedule... they rev the motor up about as high as it will go without blowing up, then dump several pounds of them into the intake... makes a foul smell and a huge cloud of evil smoke... I have no idea how much good it does, but BMW must be convinced.

RB,
Think of the engineer at BMW that came up with that idea.....do you think he had a hard time selling it to managment?
I would have liked to seen the looks on their faces...."you want to do WHAT with that engine!?"

WOnder if the cats like them shells...
I use ATF mixed with gas in a spray bottle. rev the engine up and spray it in like carb/TB cleaner. when the ATF hits the carbon buildup, it makes the carbon crack, and it flakes off and goes out the engine and also, the detergents in the ATF clean the valves about as good as any product I have ever seen. Some use straight ATF but I use about half ATF, half gas. BE CAREFUL!!!
Works REAL well and I do it to all engines before I remove the heads to clean the pistons and comb chambers... Search the internet and you should be able to find something on it.

I've seen lots of people say what they use and then swear by it and say how good it works. Well now for the real question...How the heck do you know it works if you do it before you take the heads off and then possibly never take the heads off? There's no comparison visually without orthoscopes and such coming into play. I'm just curious.
Does anybody feel the ATF might have adverse affects in other aspects, catalytic converters, seals, etc?
thanks for all the discussion

best stuff i've found is gm's top engine cleaner. it's just really tricky with a tpi. best going in with it through the pcv valve vacuum hose.

Am I THAT freakin' old?
BTW - Water mist injection works VERY well in a warm engine.
