starter removal problems

Does anybody have any techniques for starter removal. I went to pull mine this weekend and because of some valve on the lower passenger side exhaust, it looks like I will have to pull down the y-pipe. I don't know if I just didn't have the angle of the dangle lined up with the mass of the a$$ or what. I am kind of miffed about all of this so I am probably just not doing something right. Please do not reply with flames, just reply if you have something helpful to say.

It should come out. IIRC on my car, it has to be turned such that the nose points downward, with the solenoid at some non-intuitive angle. Major PITA, but not impossible.

Be careful not to whack your knock sensor in your struggles.

Another easy trick is to remove the solenoid after you get the starter off the block. Let in lay on your pipes and remove the 2 bolts on the solenoid, turn the solenoid, and it'll come right off, along with the spring. Once you take it off, you can get the starter out by putting it in a vertical position, and it'll come right out. When you put the new on, take the solenoid off first, put the starter up in there close to position and re-install the solenoid. It's alot easier to do that than pulling your exhaust, etc. I just changed my starter this past Saturday, but I remembered that trick from 5 years ago when I had to do it...

you dont have to unbolt anything. just do as your name says, just wiggy it out!! its like a rubix cube you just have to flip it turn it and just mess with it untill you have the clearance.(i know it gets tiring because its a heavy ****)

He's right. The solinoid(sp?) should be towards the outside of the car and when it does come out it wants to fall straight for your head

The area for you to pull the starter out has got to be about 1/100 of an inch larger than the starter itself, that thing is a tight bitch! You should have heard me swearing when I had to replace mine, ahhhhh!

When I replaced the first (original) starter on my Z, it did come out without disassembling anything - the replacement starter would not go in without removing the solenoid, so when I changed it last saturday, I didn't even try to put the new one in with the solenoid still attached...

I got it out last night by removing the solenoid, moved it forward tilting it up, and took the pinion end down, rotated about 30 degrees, and it came out. I didn't even break the sensor (whatever it is) in the process. Thanks to all of you guys for your helpful tips.
