Gas Smell --> Charcoal Can / Canister
Ever since the 305 was dropped in favor of the 350, the fuel vent line to the charcoal can has been blocked off. It's worked well enough for 8 years, I just remember to vent the gas cap if it's hot out. Well, that's a problem now that I have a house where the furnace is in the garage. It basically works to distribute fumey air throughout the house, irritating the wife. I put the 20+ year old charcoal can back on, but the smell this morning was nearly over-powering after pulling the car in late last night.
A search has informed me of a few methods that people have tried to route any fumes out of the engine bay: breather filters, vented caps, etc. But I think that they are only adressing half my problem.
My guess is that the charcoal is toast after 22 years and no longer doing it's job. Do they go bad?
If I pick up a new can (assuming I can get one) would that end (the majority, anyway) my fume problem? At this point I am not directing the fumes anywhere else, that is, the can is only hooked up to the tank line. I am only using the can to soak up the pressure from the tank; it is not re-directing the vented gas to the carb, nor is vacuum available to operate the purge valve.
Obviously the easy fix is to just park it outside- but the paint is just in to nice of shape to do that
TIA
Chris

Thanks for the heads-up. I think that I will start by trying to get a new canister and go from there. A few people have posted where they run the line out of the can into a breather filter and that seems to eliminate most of the fumes- so I think that I may look into that.
