383---LESS POWER!!??

ok, the 305 is seized and...well it gives me a reason to upgrade. NOW, i would like to get a 350 block and build it up...SLOWLY. I send the block to the shop for reconditioning(spelling). I want to install the TES headers because that way i don't have to pull the engine again. I was thinking with TES headers, the airfiol the car already has, and the 3" cat back would a 383 make less power then the 350 when stuck under the basically stock intake?? I would enventually upgrade the intake and everything. Also, my biggest fear the the T-5 sitting behind it. would the 383 rip it to shreads?

i don't know much about the 383 but i have a T5 with a centerforce dual friction clutch attached to my new Ram Jet 350 and so far it's held up well, although I haven't really been as stupid with it as I did with the stock 305. A T56 is next on the list after I get done with this cursed 84 Z28.

The 383 will make more power, but will run out of breath a little sooner also. Not that much power though.

OK, first, the TES headers are only good to use for a 305 or mild 350. Anything over that and you should be running 1 3/4" headers. There's a rolling GP out for these now for a little more than the TES headers and they're alot better. http://www.users.qwest.net/~zjon/z-r...enheadergp.htm
The 383 probably wouldn't make less power than the 350 unless there was something wrong with it, but keep in mind that the base is a major restriction, even with a 350. Port it and the plenum, at least. You WILL need a custom prom, no way around it. Best choice is to make the major upgrades all at once so the prom is programmed for it. The T-5 will more than likely meet it's demise (in a thousand little pieces). That's why GM never put an L98 in front of one.

My recommendation: high-flow runners(if youre using TPI), port match to heads, plenum and base, 52mm TB, (MAF) remove screens and fins, cheap stuff, SLP 1 3/4" headers, healthy (not crazy)hyd. cam, MSD-6AL, computer chip. 24# injectors. Save for a T-56. Heads? Just get a good flowing set that aren't rediculously HUGE (hard to do with a 383).

Forget anything?

basically when doing as you said, you will make more torque down low but about the same power.
