Help!! I smell gas fumes...

Okay guys, I've been smelling gas fumes coming from my car for some time now. Last night I discovered that they were coming from a black hose next to my Cold Air box. The hose that is suppose to connect to my EGR canister. I noticed it because whenever I take the car out and bring it back, I've been hearing a hissing sound (gas fumes) It seems the guy that owned the car before me just never reinstalled the canister when he put the cold air kit in the car. I was wondering if I need to put one of those canisters back in the car, or should I plug up the hose, or just leave it as is.? The car runs fine, and the gas mileage is very good, but there is a strong smell of gas, and I don't want to hurt anything by running without the canister in place.

Thanks for any help.
