ignition module??
ignition module??
My car keeps shutting off, my mechanic replace the ignition module and it work for an entire week before it stop on me again in traffic and wouldn't start. Now i've replace the module again and it work for a day and now it won't start. What would cause the module to fail constantly?? my mechanic says it might be related to the carb. Should i replace the entire coil and disturbutor?
When the mechanic, and you, replaced the ignition module(s) did you use PLENTY of the dielectric grease that comes with the new module? If not, that's plenty of reason for a new module to die quickly.
Also, when the module was replaced did you check the other "normal culprits" ?
- Wiring to the distributor? -
A loose connector or frayed wiring to the HEI can cause all kind of cool problems, including "module failures"...the wiring comes loose, or shorts out, so no power for ignition. You replace the module, and in the process remove the dist. cap, wiring etc, and it gets moved around enough to work for awhile.
With problems like these, I go back to the general engine tune.
When's the last time the plugs and wires were replaced? If you don't remember, replace 'em.
Check / replace the fuel filter as well.
When the car "dies"..does it lose all power or does it just loose ignition or spark?
When this happens, have you checked for spark at the spark plugs?
