a battery question??? please help!!!

ok i don't know if this is the battery but here is the situtation. I jumpstarted the car this morning cause the battery was dead. so it starts I drive it around and parked. then started it like an hour later and the volts had gone down. drive it around and the volts go up a little bit above 13 then i let the car sit for 3 hours and the volts go down to like 9 and the car takes like 5 seconds to turn over. does anyone know why the battery would loose power after sitting a while? also could it be the alternator i don't think it could be since it keeps charging the battery. thanx in advacne.

Could have a dead cell or two in the battery. Go buy another one. If that doesn't do it. It's alternator time.

Dead cell could be just a bad battery or abused(dropped) and lots of other possibilities. Have the battery fully charged and then tested, if it's bad replace it. Then have the alternator tested, if it's bad replace it. If you still have a problem, something may be drawing power from the battery(alternator can do this and still work correctly)

id say its bad...it wont hold a charge.

take it to a parts store (that sells batteries) have em test it, and you will most likely need a new one.

Just because a battery is "fully charged" does not mean that it is "healthy". From what you have stated, I would agree with every other post advising you to replace it, or at least have it tested (often free from parts stores).

I would guess that, while it is "fully charged", the capacity, or ability to provide current (amperes), is extremely low - perhaps enought to just start it once.

If you want to do a simple crude test yourself, with a fully charged battery, turn on all the lights and accessories (with the engine "off") for 15-30 minutes, then start it. If it doesn't even turn over, the battery is probably bad.
