Question related to "Why do we need the maf?" post.
Ok, well I was going to do that "spray water into the TB to clean the engine" thing the other day, so I started my car and started removing the tubing between the MAF and TB and as soon as I got it disconnected and started pulling it away (man you can really hear that air being sucked through, even at idle on a 2.8L) the car died.
You people say you can run without a MAF, but when I just started to bypass it the engine died. That leads me to believe either the ECM, or O2 sensor is bad... Can someone confirm, or smack me around and explain this? Thanks for your time.

1985 Camaro SC - 2.8L, auto.
Mods:
Removed air baffles, mandrel bent cat-back pipes (but stock replacment muffler, Dynomax Turbo is on the way)
Maintenance since I bought it:
Bosch Platinum Plugs, wires, cap + rotor, Radiator, Water Pump, PCV, fluids and filters

It will run if you unplug the electrical connector to it, because the computer knows that it isn't gonna get any info from the MAF, and uses default values for fuel and spark.
If you unhook the air inlet tube after the MAF, the computer sees the sensor, and it is expecting info from it. If it see no air coming through it, it thinks it is either not running, or running really slow.
Hope that helps explain the reasoning!
