Going from R-12 to 134A
My AC was last serviced in 1996 and and lasted about 4 days so I know I have a leak. Since it has not been serviced since then, what should I replace before putting in the 134a? I don't want to service it, find something wrong, fix it, reservice it and so on.
Thanks,
Mark

You definitely need to find the leak. You can try charging it with the leak finder stuff they sell at the auto parts stores and see if you can tell where the leak is coming from. It could be from anywhere, hoses, compressor, etc. I retrofitted mine to 134 using a retrofit kit I got at autozone for 35 bucks. Its not as cold but 134 is not as good of a refrigerant as R-12 is, or freon as Dupont calls it. We can thank the environmentalist wackos for that.

I guess what I am trying to get at is, if my system has a bad enough leak to go dry that quick, what components could go bad from lack of oil and refridgerant? I plan on changing all of the o-rings, the orifice tube, reciever/dryer, and whatever else you guys think of before I start looking for leaks. All suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks,
Mark

Take a look at your compressor clutch seal, those usualy go out, mine is toast and have to replace it soon, its getting too hot in WA!
There are a few additives to 134 now, that help make it a bit cooler. Its not a night and day difference, but mine dropped 5 degrees at the vent.
