failed emissions nox test in texas Help!!!!
my 92 camaro 5.0 tbi failed dallas texas emissions test......does anyone know how the air pump effects this test...
at idle i do not feel any air when i pull off the hoses at the air pump...... when does the valve that controls it kick in should i feel air at idle through the air pump?????
i also replaced the fuel injectors and rebuilt the throttle body, and new fuel pump assembly in tank.. the car runs great but during the failure of fuel system it ran rich because ports at map and egr were clogged forcing engine to run rich......
i passed on all tests except nox gas...
emissions tester suggested replacing catalytic converter...

Well you might replace the cat if you feel like just throwing money at it. But the cat has an air tube, right? If I were in your place I'd probably replace the pump frst. Oh and take off your hoses and blow a little compressed air through them to take care of any clogs maybe?
The usual emmisions tricks would apply here.
Fix the obvious problems, first.
(running rich, fails NOX ?, interesting, ,,
also, does this car have an air diverter valve?)
.
for NOX
make sure egr is working, if you have it...
move timing back a few degrees, will lower nox,
might raise HC, CO....
five percent ethanol in fuel, if the two above don't work
...
for HC, CO
make sure ignition is working at its best
make sure air pump is working, if so equipped
make sure car is completely warmed up, for test

If you have a cat back exhaust on it, there is most likely your problem. To fix it, you need to enlarge the vacuum hole in the EGR valve. This is not easy as it is a wire drill size. But the problem is the TBI system needs a little backpressure to open the EGR valve, by drilling the hole a few thousands it adds a little more vacuum assist. When I've done this it will take a car that is showing 1300 NOX down to 200-300.

The other route is to replace the factory valve with an aftermarket non-positive-pressure type.
Another common cause of EGR malfunction is plugged up EGR exhaust ports.

Hey dual_88s - I'd like to talk to that dude as well. I finally got my 383 SuperRam to pass the emissions test - LEGALLY! - but just barely. My CO was right at the limit for both speeds. Another .01 and I'd have been in trouble. Surprisingly enough, the NOx and HC were both about midrange. So I'm trying to figure out what's wrong.
Would this dude be a decent guy to talk to? I'm in Plano, so not too far away at all......

Real decent dude. He isn't going to do anything illegal but he knows what it takes to 'fix' it to pass the tests. I bought my second car from CamaroWorld in Richardson last November and I had to take it in this month for the first time for a new sticker. Took it to him and it passed first time...said it was real clean.
I haven't done anything since I bought it except a new top.....
My son took his (the other 88 ) to him and it also passed....course it was OK last year and we haven't done anything to it. Although when we first bought it, it took 6 tests to get by.....changed cat, tried all of those "guaranteed" to pass chemicals, etc. Turned out I had the wrong size injectors...engine had been swapped from 305TPI to 350TPI and wouldn't pass woth 305 injectors....
He has told me that if I ever have problems passing emissions, that is what he specializes in.....fixing them.
I know him through the local soccer association....we both referee games.
You can call me if you want....2-544-1348
