Oil Cooler - Do I need it?

89 5.7 L TPI motor, came with an engine oil cooler. Will I have problems if I don't run it? Thanks.

You probabaly wont have problems except your engine wont live as long...I have to ask why you want to delete it...they were put there for a reason...

It's just that the tubes for it are real messed up, and I don't want to mess with it right now. I could add it later I suppose. Thanks.

No you wont have problems. The only down falls I se eare your engine life will probably decrese but nothing you will ever notice. The other problem is your oil temp will rise a bit higher and it could decrease oil life. I would rather have one than not though.

The factory oil cooler is a joke. You wont have any problems running your engine without it.

Yep, not necessary to have one at all. And as long as you run synthetic oil, the warmer oil will make more hp and engine life would probably be increased.

I'm pretty sure that the following is accurate:

At some point in time, the standard Vette LT1 engine ceased to have an oil cooler because Chevy begain requiring synthetic oil. There was a time of overlap where there was an oil cooler and the synthetic requirement. Then, Chevy was comfortable with eliminating the cooler with what they learned and now require synthetic oil is used.

I'm reasonably sure that this is true. Even so, I'm personally more comfortable leaving the oil cooler equipment intact on my L98. It was designed believing that it was to be used...

Do the LT1's in the F-bodies have oil coolers?

I know my dads 1 ton work van doesnt... I would think if they were worried about it, a one ton van would have one stock.

Some do, some don't. I'm assuming it was optional...or something like that. Mine doesn't have one. The oil coolers that come with the LT1 f-bodies are useless IMHO. They just run hot coolant thru the adaptor on the engine block. I don't see how that can actually cool the oil enough to make a difference.

Thats exactly the same thing thats on the thirdgens. Its too small and has too little contact with the oil to do anything IMO.
