Starting problems
Starting problems
Once and a while, I have a hard time starting my '89 GTA. Only when it is hot, and it always starts after about 20 min of sitting. There is no click, or noise, but full battery power(about 13.5 volts).
Any help would be appreciated,
Joe

sounds like your starter solenoid is getting heat soak. do u have headers? if so that is probably it. you can get a heat shield for it, or get a FOrd solenoid and mount it up to the firewall and use that.
No black smoke, or headers. About 20 min of sitting time befor the thing will turn over.
The idea about the solenoid is a good one. What solenoid should you use? Anything specific?
Thanks again,
Joe

Here is an up date:
Put in a Neutral Safety switch. $44 Canadian. Worked for one day, then it would not start again.
Took the starter apart, and there were burnt wires all over inside. Went and got a new starter. $78 Canadian with core exchange.
Put it on the car, and got half a crank out of it!!!
Tested the Neutral safety switch and all is good. Tried to jump across the neutral safety switch, and the wire that we used started to smoke almost immediately.
I figure that there is a short between the neutral safety switch and the starter... The real question is, is there a starter relay somewhere in the car? If there is, can somebody tell me where to look?
And thanks to all that have posted replys. I appreciate all the help I can get!

Got it going!!!!!!!!

There was a short in the wire from the neutral saftey switch to the starter. After finding where the purple wire came out of the main harness through the firewall, we cut it to find out which direction the short was. It was somewhere between the NSS and the starter. replaced that with a piece of 8 guage wire, and "Vrooooommmm"!!!.
Once again, thanks too all that responded!!!
