Vortec engines

Are the Vortec engines know for any kind of problems? I am thinking of putting one in my car with TPI and was just curious if that was good or bad choice for an engine.

Nothing wrong with them they are just standard SBC truck engines with roller cam and 1pc RMS. The heads are what make them good, but you can't use them with TPI without a $400 baseplate. Not really a good idea to put TPI on one anyway if your looking for performance.

You could always build it and wait for the HSR for Vortec heads.

Why aren't they good for performance? I am looking to get around 350 HP out of it. I have seen several people on here that use them.

I said your TPI is not good for performance. The engine is nothing special but the heads make it what it is. You can't use TPI on vortec heads without a new baseplate. It will also cost you tons to get 350hp with TPI and it will be very difficult.

Just wondering...
How would the LT4 intake line up against the vortec ports?
Anybody looked into that?

John Millican says none of the LTx series fits. And if anyone, he would know...

I didnt even notice that thread before i made my reply, although it doesnt give much information. Well, here in cali, the HSR isnt much of an option regardless.

SDPC Vortec baseplate and Superram could be an option.
That would probably be too many mods for the CA smog boys tho.

Vortec heads aren't an option, either.

True, external EGR = no no for the "factory provisions" people.

But, the original poster lives in Ohio, not Cali. Don't know how the OH smog rules are....

Not true, look up Dyno Don's post on the subject of the vortec baseplate and superram and what he did.
We have people running vortec heads and passing smog here in Cali as we speak.

Still 49 pages to go.
Got any good keywords to speed it up, or better yet a link?

I already knew that the SDPC base is required for vortec heads, but I was looking on their website and they claim that with a cam, their baseplate, 52 MM TB, Edelbrock runners, stock injectors (22) and 1 7/8" headers that it should make very close to 360 horsepower. I know that the 1 7/8" headers are probably long tubes, but I can't imagine that number would be too far off if 1 3/4" SLP's or something similar was used. I guess when I specified TPI I was meaning slightly modded TPI.

Thats with the ambiguous magazine and manufactutor correction factor. The pull out all the little tricks, bells, whisles and have the absolute best tune money can buy to get those numbers.

And add up the price to get there. Compare that to the power achieved versus "other means" of getting there.

Apparently the Inspektor he drew was due for his eye exam and didn't notice the difference.

Hope he is as lucky next time.
