Why does my car overheat? espeacally at high speeds

I put in a 180 degree thermostat, and put on a new airdam, cause old one broke in half and air couldnt get pushed into the radiator, both those fixes didnt make it run cooler at all. any suggestions on what to check next. oh ya the water pump is working cause when i turn on the heater it works fine. it runs at 260 when i go faster than 70

I suggest you don't go 70 until you get this fixed.

I know it's a new thermostat, but are you sure it's working? It could be stuck closed and not allowing enough radiator fluid to go through.

Take it out and put it in boiling water, see if it opens.

If it is getting hot at high speeds it is probably your upper radiator hose.

i had the same problem. There is a shroud under your bumper. Its black and goes around the whole front clip of the car. If you cant find it its because its not there. Go to a dealer and get one quick. Our cars dont have grills to allow air to the radiator. the shroud under the car directs the air to the radiator. Get a 160* thermo too. The 180 is junk.

Nonono.. He said he's already replaced the air dam. (That's what you called a black shroud.)

180 is more than enough to cool his engine. 160, in fact, would more likely than not be too much for his car. Unless he's done some extensive tuning to make use of that 160 thermo.

I Also think you need a better radiator. I while ago back I Had a post that said "the faster I go the hotter it gets" My problem is the radiator. It really wasnt the speed I was going it was the Rpms. If I drop into 5th or 6th gear The temp Is oK but if I use a lower gear the temp will climb with the rpm's. Im trying to figure out wich radiator Is the best, so i can replace mine

Actually, you might want to check the lower radiator hose. There is supposed to be a stiffener inside the hose to prevent collapse due to pump suction at higher RPMs. When the engine is cool, remove the radiator cap and start the engine. When it warms and the thermostat opens, you should be able to detect flow in the radiator. When you wick the throttle open, the coolant level should go down briefly from pump suction. If not, the pump impeller may be slipping on the shaft or the hose may be collapsing.

If you don't detect flow when it is warmed, either the new thermostat is not opening or you may need to reverse-flush the system and hope you get any contaminants out.
