Gear Boxes and motor oil ?
Gear Boxes and motor oil ?
i'm finishing up rrepairs to an 8 speed gear box that the maker says to use 30w motor oil in. i wonder if running 15-50 or 10-30 mobil 1 would hurt anything? thanks

That's a good question! I've been wondering if I should run some full synthetic in my 70 cub cadet that calls for HD30. The old timers tell me HD30 only, but I think some Mobil 1 would work better.

Ed,
Sorry I didn't have diagrams on your gearbox - all I could find was the 3/R non-synchro box diagrams. I'm guessing that either PAO or PE synthetic would be O.K. since you don't have any combustion going on, and as long as you don't have any sealing problems.
Multigrade shouldn't be an issue, since the viscosity of synthetics is a lot more stable. In case you don't already have it, I'm sending an oil interchange chart so you can specify the correct gear oil (synthetic) if you are concerned about extreme pressure lubrication.
