starter problem
I need help with this ive replaced the stater over 5 times in my car. It starts out turing the enigne over fine then it will start missiing the flywheel put a shim in it just fine for about five times of use starts getting stuck its been the same thing everytime throw me some ideas PLEASE I DONE EVERYTHING I CAN THINK OF AND I NEED SOME HELP WITH THIS THANKS
350,
Missing the flywheel? As in "not engaging and spinning freely", or just spinning with a lot of gear noise? Is the starter assembled tightly? Is the nose piece loose from the starter motor? Is the fork worn?
You'e on the right track, but need to check alignment as well as pinion depth. Some earlier blocks had problems with the starter mounting hole locations, but I believe most of those were solved by the early '80s. If you have an older block, you might have one of those "problem children".
Of course, the distance between the pinion and flywheel is important, but you're better off with a little extra gap than a tight gap.
Oh, and your signature. You'll have to alter it a bit. As you might remember from the Membership Rules, words that are potentially offensive should not be part of posts, thread titles, or signatures. Try "rectum" or "sphincter" instead. I don't own the words, so you can use them freely. Trust me - We'll still get it.

Did you check the flywheel to see if some of the teeth are worn downin one spot?? If you have one bad spot in the flywheel it may start fine a couple times until you hit the bad spot. You should be able to see it with the inspection cover off of the trans.

Perhaps I should add, "a 350" and a description of the exhaust and stuff, isn't real helpful either.
If you can get a casting number, it will help figure out if you have one of the blocks with The Problem. Which in turn will help figure out what to do about it.
Get the casting number and post it.

Did you measure the clearance between the flexplate and the starter? If your clearance is too large you can cut a shim in half and shim the outer bolt which should decrease the clearance.

Ok, before anyone wastes any more time… Open your FSM or hanes or anthing like that and take a look at the proper procedure for shimming the starter. Hell, pry the pinion forward and check how much clearance it has when it’s engaged and then shim accordingly.
Essentially you’re telling us that you’ve tried some random shimming and it didn’t help. OK… that’s nice, how do you expect us to help you if you don’t want to check and we can’t see what is going on?
