and its a bit rusty. I should replace it with something a bit more resistant to rust. How about a stainless steel pipe?

stainless steel is the best way to go..

are you going to remove it completely? you might want to put bolt-on flanges on just in case you want to reinstall it again later

I dont know yet. I might just gut it because its 10 years old. Its probably a big loss of power.

it IS a big loss of power, but you might sell it to someone later who would need to put one in, would help them alot if you had the flanges already..

besides, if you had a straight pipe with welded-on flanges it would be a piece of cake to change, and you could always put an intermediate high-flow muffler there or something, never know

Heheheh, one month ago I blew a hole out the BOTTOM of my cat. (rusted out). Original, circa 1983. It punched out at around at my shift point of around 6,000RPM. (I need an excuse to get that 350). At first, I thought it sounded cool, like my buddys done out GTA 350, but now I realize it sounds hillbillyish and just plain stinks like ****.
Keep your cat.

Later,
Hype.
