Removing AC..worth it?
I was thinking about removing the AC from my firebird. I only cruise it once in a while and to the track...always have the windows open. How much weight does it save? Anyone done it and put the GM pulley on with the non-ac box? does it look like factory?
Thanks
Steve
Thanks
Steve
I'm actually in the process of doing it right now. I'm getting a non-ac box , i'll have to get pictures of when i get it in(which won't be for a week or two atleast...). I don't have to worry about the delete pully though(87, v-belts baby!).
But removing it will save an EASY 25-30pounds, i don't think the weight was my deciding factor, it was the ability to actually WORK on my motor...

Don't unless your a serious racer... Who wants to buy a car with no AC if you have to ever sell it..... Plus one day it will be very hot and you won't be feeling well and the AC will be nice... If it is working keep it.

I agree with Brian. Only hardcore guys that don't have working ac get rid of it. Us normal folk like our creature comforts. I kept ac just for kicks, had to use it a few times already because of this funky spring we're having in Ohio.

Personally I'd keep it. It IS possible to build a car that's faster than most things on the road and still have the "luxury" items.
However if you're one of the hardcore racers, go for it. Every little bit helps, and it certainly is weight reduction. (I think I read somewhere that it's 35-40 pounds? Something like that.) It definately cleans up the engine compartment.
Just keep it in storage somewhere so if you DO sell the car you could hook it back up.

I don't have my A/c anymore.. if I used it once a summer, it was a lot. (I love the heat.) Anyway, when I got into my accident, the freon line cracked, and gave me the excuse I needed to pull it. So, it all went above the garage, with tape over the fittings. I've yet to swap my heater/evaporator box for a non-ac heater-only box, though.

Do you have T-Tops? I know my car gets HOT if its sunny out and they're still on. I'd keep the air. I removed it on my '73 Grand Am and regretted it.
