Weird posi or not antics?

After I couldn't find my RPO sticker I jacked the car up and span the tire forward, both of them went forward. Then to the rear, the pass side continued to go forward, is this a dead giveaway as to an open rear?

I searched and didn't find enough info. I would call it a day except today when I was driving in a straight line from a stop I smashed it and squealed the drivers side tire?

Any info on pulling the cover and changing the fluid?

if you searched you should of found someone telling you to pull the cover and look, it's the only 100% sure way to know what you have.

Yea.

Remove the bolts the hold the cover on.
Remove the cover.
Drain the lube.
Check for major chunks of metal in the bottom of the pumpkin.
Remove the old gasket from the cover & pumpkin... all of it!!
Tap all the holes of the cover with a small hammer to smooth out the dimples around them.
Apply a small bead of gasket sealer to the cover and spread it evenly with your finner.
Repeat with 1 side of the gasket. The side that will sit against the pumpkin.
Allow 10-15 minutes for the sealer to set up and become tacky.
Apply dry side of gasket to cover and allow to setup for another 5 minutes.
Install cover onto rear end use a criss-cross pattern and torque bolts to manufactures torque specs.
Fill with required lube and additives (if needed) to manufactures fluid capacity.
After another 10 minutes check for leaks.

If no leaks, drive.
If leaks, fix.

Obviously I saw to pull the cover and look but I don't want to get into something I know nothing about. Where do I fill the new fluid at?

Can this be done with the rear of the car on ramps? I don't have a lift so whats the easiest way?

there's a fill plug someplace on the rear, depending on what rear you have. most likely on right front side of center section. if you can fit under the car you don't need to raise it at all, other wise lift it enough to get under the car and properly support the car so it doesn't fall on you.

AH-HAHAHAHAHAH!

So its 3:30 am and I decided its time to pull the rear seats. Tucked under the drivers side carpet at the mounting bracket are a list of rpo codes. Turns out I have 2.77 posi, so thats kinda good news... I thought the car had 3.27's though... hmmm...

Either way its got promise again and I'm happy.

Still better pull that rear cover off, only way to know for sure and it probably needs a fluid change anyway. My car should have had 2.73 gears but when pulled, it had 3.08 gears.

You mean at some point in time someone changed the rear end and/or gears in your car and didn't change the RPO code on the sticker?

How did you know it was a 3.08? I'm assuming its machined in there somewhere, but where?

From what the info says on this site, it should have had the 2.73 gears.


87 L98 TA, it was stamped on the ring gear but you can always count the teeth of the ring gear and pinion then do the math.

2:77 posi isn't bad but if you ever wanted to go higher on the gear ratio your kind of s.o.l. on the 10 bolt rear ends you have to have at least a 3:23 gear ratio to be able to do a 3:73 gear swap and on the 9 bolts you need at least a 3:27 gear ratio to go to either a 3:70 or 3:73 gear ratio. if you ever wanted to go to a higher ration with the rear end you have you would have to get a new carrier which is prob about $400.00, really cheaper to find a diff rear end.the 9 bolts have some pretty spendy gear sets running at about $300.00 for a 3:70 or 3:73 ring and pin but from what I have been told the 9 bolts rear ends are stronger than the 10 bolt rears. if this ratio suites your needs then you just got a little extra car than you thought. the only real way to find out your gear ratio is to remove your cover (pretty easy for anyone) put the car in neutral and have one person turn the wheel while you count how many teeth are on the ring gear and on the pin gear and divde the 2 from eachother and thats you ratio. you can't miss the ring gear, its over 8 inches in diameter and the pin gear meshes with this gear, the driveshaft actually bolts to the pin gear. if you do take the rear end cover off to verify your gear ratio be sure to put in gear oil that is specifically for a posi rear end.

So what would be the highest I could go with a 2.77 in either rear (not entirely sure if its 9 or 10 bolt).
