Time for an Oil Change, but what type of Oil?

Well it is time for an Oil change for 305 TPI 1987 Trans Am, but I do not know what type of oil to go with this time(summer). I have tried MaxLife 10W40, but I want to try something like Mobile 1 synthec oil. I did a search and some say 15w50 or 10w30 What type of oil (brands and weights) do you prefer I sould use in my car?

Thanks,
RPettway

I only use ROYAL PURPLE "41" RACING OIL in my 83 TA.. They also have the regular SAE synthetic oils as well.. This is a full synthetic & a bit on the pricy side, but can actually increase your horsepower..

This was recommended to be by the guy that did my motor rebuild..

Here is a link to Royal Purple if you want to check it out..

Definitely Mobil 1! 10W30 should work just fine in your part of the country.

Is it true that using synthetic oil will increase horsepower? Just wondering

Yep.

synthetic oil = less friction = less engine load = more HP

I just use regular oil, 10W30 year 'round. I want to switch to synthetic, but with the 143K I have on my engine, it would probably find it's way through every little leak, therefore, regular oil works fine with me. I just bought a case of Havoline just because it was the cheapest name brand stuff at the time.

If your engine is relativly fresh, synthetic should be fine.

It may "free up" 1%-2% more horsepower, but you will never notice it. That shouldn't be the reason to use synthetics though. the improved lubrication, corrosion resistance, and extended life should be the main reasons.

RPettway, If you switch to synthetics, feel free to use a 5w30 or 10w30 year round.

I use mobil 1 in all my cars. 10w/30 is all you need. You can use a longer filter, which holds more oil, if you want a little extra insuarance.
