L98 Longblock tempory cam help

Hello All.

I am picking up a 90' L98 Longblock (~90k) on the motor this week. I am going to be dropping this into my 92' RS and converting to Carb.

I don't know what to do as far as cam selection. I don't have the money to do a "all at once" more of a "month to month" type of deal.

Here are the parts I have to buy just to install the engine:

Hooker 2210 1 3/4" Longtubes
Mufflex Ypipe - 4"
Flowmaster catback - 3"
Edelbrock Air Gap
Holley 750DP

That pretty much covers everything needed except the cam to get this engine running.

This car is going to be a weekend warrior and eventually shooting for 400rwhp and High elevens - again eventually. That is why the large headers and carb. I don't want to buy parts twice .

So I do not have the money right now to invest in a good set of heads so I am limited in valve lift on the stockers (083). I also do not want to put any large amount of money into the L98 heads - every dollar spent there = a dollar toward aftermarkets...

What would be your suggestions. Use the stocker? Or what options are out there for improvents over the L98 cam, but at the same time staying withing the constraints of the stock heads. Thanks ahead of time for any help.

I'd get an LT1 cam, you can find them all over ebay for cheap, cheap, cheap. I think you can also find new copies somewhere for $50, but i can't remember.

If I went with the Hotcam kit, will I have to make modifications to the heads??? Or will just the larger springs suffice?

If said modifications are required - is it an expensive mod or fairly common reasonable one?

Seems like it would be common-sensical to avoid spending any money on modding stuff to accept a temp solution. Since every penny you spend on this, just puts your permanent solution another penny farther out of reach.

The LT1 cam is probably the best and most economical way to go, if you feel like you just have to change something. Personally, if the one that's in it isn't broken, I don't see why you couldn't just use it.

I know, only thing is I know with the large headers, large carb, and decent intake this thing is going to run like SH** until I do the head/cam swap.

Of coarse being winter maybe I'll somehow run into some unforseen $$$ and be able to get a set of AFR's before winter's over. Have to try to watch the classifieds here and pick up a good deal!

IMO, none of that stuff is "big" enough to cause problems; even with the stock L98 cam. Should work fine without wasting any more $$$$ than you have to on buying parts twice.

True, I've only had experience with VS carbs on Auto's and more afraid that the DP without a bigger cam and stall would cause some bog issues with the Stock converter.

Do any of you know if the L98 and L03 torque converters are the same units?
