Cooling fan blues
Cooling fan blues
Okay... My radiator fan doesn't come on until about 260, if even then.. Single-fan setup. If I turn the ac on, the fan comes on, so I know the fan's working. So my first through was, maybe the fan switch isn't working. So, I replaced it. (It IS the one that's down in the block on the passenger's side, and not the one on the intake, right?) Still no good. There's nothing in the way of the threads, so I know it can ground, and I know coolant goes through there because when I took the old one off plenty of antifreeze came out. (Yes I cleaned it all up.)
So, any suggestions as to why it's not coming on?

The fan switch isn't in the block, it's in the pass side head, between the #6 & #8 spark plugs. The thing in the side of the block, down low just above the oil pan rail and in front of the starter, is the knock sensor.
Check its wire. It's real close to the exhaust manifold, so the connector gets hot, and they crumble sometimes.

Because is is programmed not to come on until 239 degrees. Change it out to one that turns the fan on at 200 and off at 185. That should do it. www.jegs.com sells them.
OR worst case scenario, you do what I did when I retro-fitted my '80 with twin electrics. Buy a b+M adjustable controller, and just wire that right into the fan itself, so you can set it anywhere you like.
