Hey gang, been out of the loop for a little bit with X-mas and all...but back now, and with a plan to try and build some more hp into my L05 flat tappet 350. My ultimate goal is to achieve a streetable 1hp per ci. 350hp from a 350ci. Now from what I've learned, the L05 is only 8.3:1 compression (at least this one from a Suburban is). So...

Here are my proposed mods/components, let me know what you think.

First would be a complete 3" exhaust. Thinking Hooker 2055 and catback too.
Next L98 58cc Aluminum Corvette Heads and .028 Vortec gaskets.
Also along with this, Weiand 7525 single plane EGR intake.
The last piece of the puzzle (aside from obvious tuning issues), is the cam selection. I am thinking of using Summit's K1105 .465/.488 224/234.

So what do you think?

Heads are fine, but I would use a dual plane intake and a comp xe262 cam.

One of the better mods you could do would be to replace the factory dished pistons with some nicer flattops.
Even if you get some bottom end cast pistons for about $70/set, you'll be better off, cause it gives you a tighter quench clearance, plus more compression.

Yeah Streetiron, I'm thinking of looking for another block to build-up with flat tops, have it bored and decked (if needed), and balanced. But that may be a long time coming. The engine that I am currently running has around 87k on it. Do you think the 58cc heads would be too small for later on, when I eventually do the block?

gmgod,
I'm running TBI, and alot of discussions on here seem to indicate that the single plane is better for that induction(?) Wouldn't the compcams give me less with the lower lift?

If you're planning on putting together a better engine in the future, it would make more sense to just put your present engine together without getting too picky about the 1hp/ci consideration. My suggestion would be to focus on simply getting it assembled with some inexpensive internal parts. And just let it be whatever it is, HP wise.
But be sure that anything expensive like heads could be re used on your "ultimate build"
Guys are running 58cc 305 heads with flattops in their 350 thirdgens, I'm sure you'd be able to get away with that on your dished piston combo.
You should decide now if your next build will be a stroker, especially if you're going to buy a set of heads that you'll transfer onto that.
There seem to be a lot of posts from guys who bought stroker kits without planning in advance what heads they'll be using.

That makes alot of sense. I guess for now, I should just concentrate on things like the bolt-ons until I am ready to do the block up. At present, I haven't been planning on building a stroker, just a normal 3.48 stroke. Just wondering what you think, if I left the deck height at the (supposed) .025 and the .028 gaskets. Do you think that the compression pressure would be too much with the selected lift cam and 58cc heads? I also have no idea what the quench is right now, being as though I've never actually had the heads off yet. Aren't the factory gaskets usually like .040?
I guess what I'm trying to get at, would be the question of which cc heads to concentrate on, so that I do not fall into that same category as you stated You mentioned that the L05's pistons had a dish, any idea as to what cc dish they might be? Or are they made further in the hole than say a flat top .025? I know this may be alot of questions, but I really only want to have to purchase heads once.

When you get the heads off, you'll sse what I mean about those pistons.
They're dished but they might as well just be .125" down the hole, because the crown of the piston doesn't amount to much more than a ring around the outside.
I think they're 18cc but I'm not sure.
58 cc heads would probably be okay.
Or vortecs too... 64cc.
